The year of T20 World Cup has started on a good note for Team India as the Men in Blue thrashed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20I. After the first game of the series in Guwahati was abandoned without a ball being bowled, India thoroughly outplayed the visitors to take an unassailable lead in the three-match series.

Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka managed to post only a modest total of 142 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. Their openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Avishka Fernando started well and stitched 38 runs for the first wicket but the visitors could not really find the impetus to close their innings on a strong note. Kusal Perera was the top-scorer with 34 while Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers by taking 3 for 23.

In reply, India chased down the total without breaking any sweat whatsoever. Openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan all but sealed Sri Lanka’s fate by adding 71 runs in 9 overs. Both of them departed in quick succession but it did not let Sri Lanka claw their way back in the game. Skipper Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer shared a fifty-plus stand to help India cross the finishing line.

VVS Laxman’s T20 World Cup squad

While Team India was busy playing the game against Sri Lanka, former India batsman VVS Laxman revealed the squad he thinks could help the Men in Blue win the T20 World Cup in Australia. Speaking on Star Sports, the legendary batsman picked India’s squad for the marquee event that gets underway in October.

While most of the names were pretty much expected, VVS Laxman surprisingly left out Shikhar Dhawan as well as MS Dhoni. Dhawan has not been doing well in T20Is from quite some time now and failed to impress against Sri Lanka too, scoring just 32 from 29 balls. On the other hand, MS Dhoni has not played for India since July.

However, the former India skipper is expected to make it to the T20 World Cup. Speculations are rife that Dhoni would return to the squad after the IPL. VVS Laxman also included two allrounders – the incumbent Hardik Pandya and newcomer Shivam Dube – in his side.

VVS Laxman’s squad for T20 World Cup:

Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Manish Pandey, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar
