The first T20I of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and the West Indies was played at Pallekele on March 4 and saw the visitors get better of the home side in what was a historic night for West Indies captain Kieron Pollard. The Trinidadian became the first cricketer in T20 history to feature in 500 T20 games.

The 32-year-old led the Caribbean team and proved to be too much for Lasith Malinga-led Sri Lankan team, as 67* by Lendl Simmons and contributions from Andre Russell (35) and Pollard (34) led the team to a formidable total of 196/4 in 20 overs. Malinga, Udana, Sandakan, and Wanindu Hasaranga picked one wicket each.

In the chase, Kusal Perera proved to be the only good thing for Lankans, as he made 66 in 38 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes. Apart from him, Hasaranga made 44 runs in the lower order, but these two innings were not enough for Lankans to get even near to the finishing line, as the next best scores were 11 and 10. However, the match saw one funny moment as Hasaranga tried his best to get as many runs as possible.

Wanindu Hasaranga goes off the pitch to hit Bravo

As the innings drew to a close, Hasaranga was trying his level best to get as many runs as possible in order to reduce the margin of defeat. In doing so, he came against one of the best death bowlers in T20 history in Dwayne Bravo, who made his international cricket return after a short hiatus. On the 5th ball of the 14th over, bowled by Bravo, the Lankan batsman tried to give himself some room on the leg side and hit the ball over offside.

In doing so, he went too far, ending up at short leg position, while Bravo followed him. Hasaranga managed to lob the ball over covers for a single and was smiling at the bowler, who smiled back at the seemingly funny situation.

Meanwhile, Kieron Pollard also became the second batsman to reach 10,000 T20 runs with his innings of 34 runs in 15 balls. In 500 T20 matches, Pollard has 10,000 runs and picked 279 wickets with one century and 49 half-centuries to his name.
