Waqar should step down as Head Coach says Zaheer Abbas: Pakistan legend and batting great Zaheer Abbas has joined the chorus of former cricketers demanding the stepping down of head coach Waqar Younis after the humiliating defeats of the national side in the ODIs and T20 internationals in Bangladesh.
Abbas was quoted saying, “There is no doubt that Waqar was a great cricketer but as a coach he has failed to deliver the goods and should be replaced”.
Popularly known as the Bradman of Asia, Abbas himself was attached to the Pakistan side as a team consultant last year but was asked to step down after the team’s failure to enter the World T20 semis in Bangladesh.
“I have never seen a more spineless performance from the national side in my life. Losing is a part of life but the way we played it just did not appear this was the Pakistan team playing against Bangladesh”. Abbas further stated that not only did the board need to make changes in the team management including the head coach, but there was also the need to change the thinking of the players.
“There are no excuses for the way we have been defeated in Bangladesh. It is very sad for Pakistan cricket. I never imagined our players will perform so badly” Abbas added.
Asked about his interest in the coaching job Abbas said he and many other former Pakistan players were willing to offer their services to Pakistan cricket.
