Former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis believes that every person deserves a second chance in life. His statement has come in alignment with the talks of Salman Butt being on the fringes of national selection in the recent times. Butt was banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2010 for his alleged involvement in the infamous spot-fixing scandal.
Mohammad Amir, the pacer who was also a part of the tainted trio, made his comeback and is a part of the national team now. However, the other two players, namely Butt and Mohammad Asif, have found no favor from the selectors since their return despite putting up impressive performances in domestic cricket.
Both the players have served their suspension period and are plying their trade in the domestic circuit. Salman recently brought up his best scores since his return in the finals of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy. He scored tons in each innings to lead his side Wapda to a win in the Quaid Trophy. His name has been flagging around for a national comeback since then.
Especially with Pakistan struggling in the batting department, the 32-year-old has a good case served for himself. Now, he has got the backing from the former Pakistan coach Waqar Younis. In a conversation with BT Sport, Waqar quoted that everyone deserved a second chance. He called Salman a very good player and cited his recent performances as a testimony for the same.
“He has served his sentence and everyone maybe deserves another go in life. He was playing really well and also he has served his sentence and punishment and I feel personally that everyone deserves a go. People are going to have different views. He is a good player, he is playing really well,” Waqar said.
Earlier, even Butt had expressed that he highly regrets the wrong doings he did in 2010. The only way he can cover up for that is by giving his best performances for the men in green again.
