'Washing dirty linen in public is never a great thing' - Aakash Chopra feels BCCI and Virat Kohli could've handled captaincy saga better

In the past few days, the atmosphere around Indian cricket has been chaotic, to say the least. Post the axing of Virat Kohli as the ODI skipper, Indian fans are yet to get a clear picture of the entire fiasco. Thus, uncertainty has clouded the entire scenario.

While Sourav Ganguly and others associated with the BCCI had earlier said that they asked the 33-year-old not to give up the T20I captaincy, the batting maestro contradicted them, and said that no one ever stopped him from quitting captaincy in the shortest format of the game. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra recently gave his thoughts on this situation between India’s red-ball captain, and the BCCI.

He is of the opinion that the situation could have been handled better. The cricketer-turned-commentator felt that the board should’ve respected the cricketer’s contribution and also pointed out the communication gap.

Kohli could have also picked up the phone and spoken to them, says Chopra

“It could have definitely been handled better, let’s be very very honest. There are a lot of things which could have been better where they could have asked or had a discussion,” said Aakash Chopra on his Youtube channel. However, the 44-year-old felt that before making any statements, Kohli should have clarified all the uncertainties with the BCCI officials.

“Virat Kohli could have also picked up the phone and spoken to them, everyone whose statements he didn’t like because it was not only sources but it came from the horse’s mouth, there were BCCI officials in that,” he added. “So let’s discuss between the two of us like grown-up adults and the BCCI officials could have also done the same thing.

“Washing dirty linen in public is never a great thing. The rumour markets are again hot and then the same sources, the same drama, we come back to square one, which we don’t want.” said the former opener, while addressing the rumour markets.

Nevertheless, Chopra did conclude by saying that these differences wouldn’t have an impact on the upcoming series against South Africa. He highlighted the fact that the Indian team is a professional unit, and will be at their best. The first of the three-match Test series against the Proteas is all set to commence on December 26.
