The General Elections in Pakistan took place on July 25, 2018. Three parties- Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by former Pakistani World Cup-winning all-rounder Imran Khan, Pakistan Muslim League (PML), headed by Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took part in the elections. A total of 269 seats were up for grabs for the three contenders.

Any one party needed 137 seats to win an overall majority. Eventually, it was Imran Khan’s party which won 109 seats. He also was crowned as the Prime Minister of the country. Yesterday, Khan unofficially announced the results in a statement recorded at his residence and today the same has been confirmed. The legendary sportsperson promised a new Pakistan after the election, marred by the controversy of vote-rigging, came to a close.

News channel commits a gaffe

Meanwhile, BBC Newsnight committed a massive blunder. They mistook Imran Khan for another retired Pakistani all-rounder in Wasim Akram. The news channel was documenting a show of Khan’s journey from cricket to politics. However, they ran a footage where Akram was seen cleaning up the batsman’s stumps with his venom and aggression.

The Social media was quick to notice the horrendous error and BBC made an apology thereafter. At the end of the show, Evan Davis, a presenter, said, “We made a mistake in our opening tonight. The footage we showed was of the cricketer Wasim Akram, not Imran Khan. Don’t know how that happened, sincere apologies.”

In the meantime, a Twitter-user posted a tweet and tagged Shaniera Thompson. The user wrote, “Your husband is about to be the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Congrats.”

Thompson, who is married to the Lahore-born cricketer since August 12, 2013, had a humourous reply in store. She reverted to the user and wrote, “He said he was only going to Lahore to vote!”
