Sri Lanka U19 cricketer Kamindu Mendis belongs to the unusual category of bowlers who have the ability to bowl using both their hands. Cricketers with ambidextrous skills are very rare and the one who possess this hard to find skill instantly grabs the eyeballs.
This Galle-born talent was noticed in the ongoing ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Officially the 17-year-old is shown to be as an off-break bowler in the bowler introduction plate which appears when a bowlers comes into bowl. His Cricinfo profile reads ’Right-arm off-break, Slow left-arm orthodox.’ However, he can comfortably switch into bowling left orthodox too.
Sri Lanka is known to produce wristy off-break bowlers and mystery spinner who can bamboozle the opposition. But, this bowler is a very different kind to have emerged from the Emerald Island. He has already captured 4 wickets from the 3 matches he has got to play till now and definitely promises much better performances in coming days as the tournament progresses.
Incidentally, few days back Indian domestic cricketer Akshay Karnewar who plays for Vidarbha showcased the similar skills during a match of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Baroda. The 23-year-old bowling all-rounder bowled left-arm spin to right-handed batsmen and right-arm off-breaks to left-handers in the match. His skills stunned the Baroda batsmen Irfan Pathan and Hardik Pandya who faced him at the crease.
The Sri Lankan teens are currently doing well in the mega event of the future superstars. They have already qualified for the quarterfinals and will face England on February 7.
