Watch: Amla drops Rohit Sharma but he gives him a chance to smile: South Africa tested the Indian batsmen on the first morning in Delhi, bowling mainly wicket-to-wicket on a pitch that lent more support than the one in Nagpur. Hashim Amla had a very successful day as a leader today on the field. His bowlers complemented him really well as India slipped to 139/6 at tea.
Rohit Sharma once again disappointed when he came out to bat today after the wicket of skipper Virat Kohli. He looked very sloppy and it seemed as if he was just interested in surviving at the crease than to knock some runs off his bat. On the other side, fast bowler Kyle Abbott was testing the Indian batsman very well with his pace and control. The conditions offered support to him as the ball was seaming nicely at the start and then began reversing later.
Abbott gained an upper hand over Sharma in the very first over he bowled at him. The ball was swerving nicely into him and the effect of the moving ball was evident. Sharma defended the first four deliveries for no runs. The fifth ball had some late movement and it caught the edge of Sharma’s bat. The ball carried to Hashim Amla who was standing at first slip. However, he failed to take the catch as the ball just slipped off his fingers and popped out of his grip. Amla, while falling down, tried for the second time in vain as the ball had just gone out of his reach. It was a simple chance for the South African skipper. Rohit Sharma survived this time.
But like Rohit has been a generous batsman and there was yet another chance in the air. In the very next over, he tried to break free and went for a big hit against off-spinner Dane Piedt. Imran Tahir was standing at long-on, but Sharma chose to neglect him and hit the ball straight down to his throat. Tahir completed the catch as Amla was patiently waited for him to complete the catch. He smiled in relief and celebrated with wicketkeeper Elgar.

It was an odd time to play such shot as India desperately required a partnership. Dane Piedt became an unlikely threat for India. He already had three wickets in the day and Sharma became his fourth victim.
