Watch: Andre Russell cracks the fastest century in CPL

Andre Russell proved his worth of that of an impact player after he smashed the fastest century of CPL this season. The Jamaica Tallawahs all-rounder pummelled Trinbago Knight Riders racing his way to a 42 ball century and help his team post a formidable 195/7 in the first innings of the second qualifier at Basseterre, St Kitts.

Speaking about the century, Jamaica Tallawahs skipper Chris Gayle said, “Russell was superb for us, a fantastic innings by him. I’ll take it back on Sunday (fastest CPL hundred record).”

It was an end to the pretty ordinary season Russell was having this year. Before hitting this century, he had only 186 runs in 9 games. But, this knock came as a refreshing change for him. The hard-hitting all-rounder came at No.5. The Knight Riders looked to be having an upper hand over the game with Kevon Cooper rocking the top order by snaring three wickets in his first spell.

At the time when Russell came in, the Tallawahs were at a reasonable position, sitting at 67/4 in 9.1 overs. But, Russell onslaught thereafter changed the whole course of the game. He went full blast and showed no mercy.

The opposition bowlers who had gained control over the Tallawahs were treated rashly by the right-hander. Sixers went flying at regular intervals and the run rate saw a huge surge. The most unfortunate bowler was Ronsford Beaton. It took him just 23 balls to complete his half-century and took only 21 more to complete the three-figure mark which reached with a soaring six off a half volley.

He remained unconquered in the end finishing at an exact 100 studded with a record 11 sixes and 3 boundaries. It was simply an astounding knock.

Russell on breaking his teammate Chris Gayle’s record said, “Happy to beat a guy like Gayle because that means that I’m doing something special. Sangakkara told me that he has seen nothing like that in his 16 years of international career. We have to keep this momentum going.”
