Mitchell Marsh, who was dropped from the third Test against South Africa, did not have the best of the comeback to the starting XI today in the opening ODI of the Chappell – Hadlee series at the Sydney Cricket ground. The promising all—rounder would probably have thought of proving his point in the match with appreciable all-round performance. But, unfortunately, he had a very ominous start to the day.
Marsh was promoted to bat ay number five after Australia lost the core of the top order inside 20 overs. Skipper Smith was batting well and a determined looking Marsh was expected to provide him support. But, unfortunately, stay at the crease was limited to just 3 balls. If that was annoying, more frustrating was the fact that it wasn’t his fault at all.
Jimmy Neesham continued with his spell and came in to bowl the 21st over with Steven Smith taking the strike. The ball, pitched in the good length was driven straight back crisply by the Aussie skipper. But, the ball cleanly went back towards the bowler who diverted the ball onto the stumps. Marsh, backing up in the non-striker’s end was caught a couple of foot outside the crease and was run out in the ordeal. There was an obvious disgust and frustration visible as the all-rounder walked back punching his bat.
New Zealand had just tasted a success in the form of George bailey’s wicket in the 19th over ad his sudden wicket probably put Australia on the backfoot. But, there was nothing to worry as Smith continued and went to smash his seventh century to help Australia set a potentially match-winning total.
