The 13th match of the Big Bash League between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers was played in front of a colourful crowd at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. The fans are known to create festive atmosphere across the venues hosting the BBL matches. Taking a catch in the stands is an exciting prospect for most fans attending a match. The match witnessed arguably the most incredible crowd catch in BBL history.
At the start of Renegades innings, Chris Gayle took the longest of handles to Brad Hogg and deposited him into the second tier of Etihad Stadium, one fan had his eyes fixed on the ball. Without worrying about the other patrons seated around him, he attempted to make his presence felt in tumbling style. Diving across three people to his right, he took an acrobatic catch to start and celebrated wholeheartedly. Fittingly one of the game’s greatest crowd-pullers, Gayle, was caught in the crowd in a grand fashion.
The match, though, turned out to be a disappointing one for the home fans as their team lost to the defending champions from Western Australia. A target of 171 looked competitive however the Scorchers won the match by 10 wickets as their openers made merry on a batting paradise. The skipper Michael Klinger scored 90 off 58 while Shaun Marsh made 76 off 54. Earlier in the evening, the home team’s skipper Aaron Finch entertained the fans with a brilliant 72 off 48 and in the company of Gayle, who scored 41 off 35, gave his team a strong start.
