Watch: BJ Watling takes a sharp catch to dismiss Steven Smith: Yesterday was a historic day for Test cricket. It was the first day of the trial of day/night Test cricket. The crowd was huge, the pitch behaved well and the Pink ball swung nicely. Overall, there were 256 runs and 12 wickets in the first day as Australia ended at 54/2 with Adam Voges and Steven Smith holding each end together at the crease. The day 2 began with the fall of overnight batsman Adam Voges, Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh. Australia was 109/5 with Steven Smith and Peter Nevill at the crease.
From the start of the day, debutant left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner was being preferred over Mark Craig. But, it was the offie who brought yet another breakthrough for the New Zealand in just his second over of the day. Mark Craig began the 48th over. Smith played down the first ball for no runs.
Craig bowled the second one from around the wicket; Smith unexpectedly went down the pitch and attempted a wild slog. But, unfortunately, the ball turns too much to beat him. It gets a faint inside edge off his bat and deviates to the leg side while still traveling to wicket-keeper.
BJ Watling moved quickly and completed an amazing catch. It was a mighty charge at the off-spinner by the Australian skipper with an aim to clear the straight boundary. But, Smith was comprehensively beaten by the flight and dip of the ball. Watling was confident of the inside edge and did not even bother to stump Smith who was way outside the crease.
