Dan Christian’s purple patch continued for the Hobart Hurricanes in the 5th edition of the Big Bash League as he made an entertaining 58 off 40 which included 4 fours and 3 maximums. Entering at 3-20 against the Melbourne Renegades, the hard-hitter had waited for 18 balls before hitting his first boundary – a huge six over long-off. Three overs later, he sent Cameron Gannon over the rope twice; the second one was a bizarre hit that somehow cleared the fence.
The ball was full and wide outside off-stump, Christian who had been persistent with peppering the short boundary, reaped rich reward this time. He went across the line and slog swept the ball flat over the square leg boundary, even as he slipped while executing the stroke. I was an incredible shot as he managed to execute it in spite of being off balance. Christian’s cameo got his side to a respectable 140, but it was never going to be enough on a decent pitch after a horrible start from his team’s bowlers.
Chris Gayle smashed a belligerent 41 off just 15 balls and Renegades’ skipper Aaron Finch made a brilliant 60 off 39 balls to take his team’s total past 100 in 10 overs. The Melbourne outfit cruised home in 14 overs for the loss of 5 wickets leaving the home fans at Hobart disappointed. The Renegades now prepare for the return leg of the Big Melbourne Derby, while the Hurricanes head to the MCG on Wednesday to take on the Melbourne Stars as the exciting BBL reaches its business end.
