Watch: Ganguly thwacks a delightful shot over the ropes off a clueless Gillespie: Awesome leader? Put a tick. Exceptional batsman? put a tick. Outright and frank? Put a tick. Loved or hated, Ganguly doesn’t let anyone out without any reaction. The prince of Kolkatta was an unbelievably talented batsman but has been a little under recognized as he had to compete in the same era as Sachin and Dravid.
With a rather unusual batting stance, Ganguly might look a bit timid while facing the ball, but was a silent assassin from whose bat class and elegance flew together, and was easily one of the most delightful sights on a cricket pitch apart from the lush green grass that endows the pitch. More particularly Ganguly is considered to be clinically artistic through the off side, and can punish any bowler who dares to stray or wave on the off side giving him enough room to free his arms. It is this incredible virtuous skill that obviously instigated people like Ian Chappell to brand Dada as the God of offside.
One of the most famous sixes of Ganguly through the offside came against Australian pacer Jason Gillespie. Gillepsie had Ganguly besieged with a humpty number of fielders on the offisde. Dada was batting on 8 from 19 balls, and Ganguly took guard. He seemed undeterred by the ominous presence of fielders on the offside. And thwacked the ball with a majestic extension of defense that probably might have crushed the will of any bowler. Gillepsie look devastated and demoralized and understandably so. It was not just a cricketing shot, it was poetry in motion!
