Team India having failed to capitalize on the usage of the Decision Review System has put behind some work and that was evident on the first day of the third Test in Ranchi. They didn’t raise a couple of questions to the third umpire with that saving their reviews and when Virat Kohli eventually did signal for a review against Shaun Marsh it went in their favor.

Earlier in the morning, Ishant Sharma had a close lbw call while the bowler looked, certain skipper, Kohli opted against it and proved to be the right one as the ball was pitching outside the line of the leg-stump. Umesh Yadav also had a leg-before appeal turned down but they decided against taking it up and was also the right decision.

Marsh had come out to the center after Matt Renshaw was dismissed for 44, he was just 8 balls old at the crease and inside edged a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery. Cheteshwar Pujara stationed for a similar bat-pad catch dived to his left and took a really good catch despite his initial movement being on the opposite side. The fielder and the Indian team was certain they had their man but umpire Ian Gould didn’t detect an edge there.

There was no doubt and they raised the appeal upwards using their first review of the day. Third umpire Nigel Llong saw the replays and the ball was definitely deflecting off the bat before hitting the pads. He further confirmed it with the UltraEdge and there was a conclusive spike in there and he asked Gould to overturn his on-field decision.

The Indian team had the third wicket in the morning session and despite the fact that Australia scored over 100 runs this gave them the session. Steve Smith had earlier won the toss and decided to bat first n a Ranchi wicket that looks like a typical Indian pitch, good to bat on in the first inning and will test the batsmen in the second. They couldn’t really make the most of the first session and gave away the momentum to India at Lunch.
