Jos Buttler sparkled wearing the English shirt, while the spectators and his team-mates remained speechless after witnessing the maverick show.
“Once I got to 50, feeling like everything was clicking into place, I knew that, if I batted the whole innings, I’d be up around the 100 mark. Everything seemed to come off – when I didn’t get it, it landed in a gap. It was one of those days.”
It was one of those days indeed, when everything comes off nicely from the middle of the willow. Jos Buttler has so far played 65 ODI games for England, notching up 166 runs at an average of 34.97 and a strike rate of 117.26.
Interestingly, all his international centuries(3) are the top 3 fastest hundreds for England. But Dubai witnessed the best show among those. He reached the magical three figures in 46 balls, courtesy 8 sixes and 8 boundaries. He went on to smack two more boundaries before finishing with an unbeaten 116 off 52 balls at a strike rate of 223.07.
England captain, Eoin Morgan, was left to wonder at Buttler’s range of stroke and consistency of cultured hitting in an innings containing 10 fours and eight sixes.
“I think we were lost for words in the changing room,” said Morgan, who has had no trouble retaining faith in Buttler’s ability even though he had previously gone 22 international innings without a 50.
“So many [words] were used to describe it – but one that wasn’t was a surprise,” he said. “We’re very privileged to work and train day in, day out with Jos. The ability he shows there all came together for him today. It was just absolutely incredible – certainly the best one-day knock I’ve ever seen in an England shirt.”he added.
