West Indies batsmen Kieran Powell and JJ Smuts of South Africa had a nasty head collision in the Caribbean Premier League in Barbados on July 14. Powell was taken off the field in an ambulance after both of them ran into each other attempting to take a catch from the Barbados Tridents batsman AB de Villiers.
De Villiers has been in great form and was on 67 in the 19th over when he smashed Alzarri Joseph’s ball to the wide mid-on region. Powell ran in from straight long-on and Smuts came from the opposite direction and both players collided heavily. In the end neither got a hand to the ball but they still managed to collide in sickening fashion. Powell’s head appeared to hit the ground heavily.
Both of them were down on the ground for several minutes and support staff from both teams rushed in. Powell was eventually put on a stretcher and lifted into an ambulance that had arrived on the scene.
After the incident, the game continued and Smuts opened the batting for St Kitts and Nevis in less than half an hour. A 54-ball 82 from De Villiers helped his side set a target of 181. The Patriots went on to lose by 25 runs, with skipper Faf du Plessis scoring 42 off 34 and Jonathan Carter with his 46 off 38 being the top scorers for the team. They were the only players to pass 20-run mark.
