The inaugural edition of the Masters Champions League kicked off with the Gemini Arabians facing off against the Libra Legends. Kumar Sangakkara rolled back the yeast with a whirlwind innings of 86 off just 43 deliveries. Playing at the picturesque Dubai International stadium, the MCL kicked off with a bang.
While former Indian opener Virender Sehwag and South African Richard Levi laid the much-needed foundation for the Arabians’ innings, it was Kumar Sangakkara who stole the show. The classy left-handed batsman, currently enjoying a stint with English club Surrey cut loose following his slow start. (Also watch: Shreyas Iyer takes stunning catch in Deodhar Trophy)
Making a slow yet steady start to his innings, the former Sri Lankan skipper found himself at 17 off 21 deliveries with the run rate at 8 per over. However, in spite of the slow start, Sangakkara cut loose, smashing the Libra Legends bowlers to all parts of the Dubai International stadium.
Facing a rather feeble attack including Ryan ten Doeschate, Andy McKay and Ian Butler, Sangakkara spared none as he compiled the remaining 60 odd runs in a mere 20 deliveries. the 38-year-old former wicketkeeper-batsman produced a similar knock when Sri Lanka picked up a fantastic win over India in 2014 ICC World T20 final, thus helping Sri Lanka pick up their first cricketing silverware since 1996.
The Gemini Arabians picked up a massive 78 run win over the Libra Legends in spite of a fighting 53 from Ryan ten Doeschate. Kumar Sangakkara was rightly selected as the man of the match following his match-winning knock of 86 off 43 balls.
