Jayawardene was playing on 43 and the shot was just a harmless push at a good length ball and the bat just broke into two. Players got a welcome break in the 23rd over as Jayawardene had to call for a new bat from the Sri Lankan camp.

Jayawardene made a wonderful century which got a nervy Sri Lankan team past the Afghanistan barrier. Lankans were chasing 232 set by the Afghans, but lost both their openers for naught and Kumar Sangakkara for just 7. Mahela along with Angelo Mathews guided Sri Lanka towards victory and Thisara Perera completed the formalities of the win by hitting 47 runs from 26 balls. Jayawardene had scored a duck in the match against New Zealand and was under pressure to perform in this match.
