Matt Henry played an explosive cameo of 48 runs and shared a 73 runs match-saving partnership with Mitchell McClenaghan to save New Zealand from a troublesome situation in the first ODI. The hosts were at an uncomfortable 178/7 when he came out to bat but his stupendous show powered the Kiwis to 280/8 after 50 overs.

Later, New Zealand successfully defended the target by bundling out Pakistan for 210 and winning the match by 70 runs.

Pakistan fast bowlers blew away New Zealand’s top order, reducing them to 99 for 6 within 23 overs. The fast Basin reserve pitch had turned into a nightmare for the hosts.

However, Matt Henry stood up and played an impressive innings. His knock comprised of 4 boundaries and 4 massive sixes. Two of these maximums came off the 46th over by Wahab Riaz. McClenaghan started the over and was welcomed with a steaming bouncer. However, McClenaghan retaliated and struck a six off the second ball. A single off the next delivery gave Matt Henry the strike.

Henry, who was on 12 runs off 17 balls, looked set to press the pedal and he did that immediately off the following delivery. Riaz banged a short delivery. Henry lunged, cleared his front foot and hit the ball over the long on area for huge hit out of the ground over the roofs.

The next ball was treated with the same the aggression and met with similar result. Riaz fired in a short delivery again. This time, Henry wasn’t in a very comfortable position. He swayed away from the ball and managed hook the ball. The ball had connected enough to clear the ropes for another six. In all, the over costed 19 runs for Pakistan.
