A very interesting thing occurred during the innings break of the 8th BBL match between the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Sixers at the Etihad Stadium, Melbourne. The Renegades celebrated the Indian community during the innings break. An artificial elephant and a troupe of dancers dressed in traditional Indian attire entertained the crowds with Bollywood songs playing in the background.
Melbourne has the largest Indian population in Australia and this unique display of Indian culture and tradition might made the Indian community there happy.
The small event looked like a Bollywood Bash in full swing as dancers staged a dance show in the stadium. An elephant was brought out which looked fairly real. Its appearance also convinced commentator Mark Waugh to believed that the elephant was ‘quite real’. The crowd looked to be thoroughly enjoying the unique experience.
Pallavi Sharda, the Australian-Indian actress and dancer, came down from Mumbai to perform in the Stadium. She expressed her happiness at the Renegades hosting such a cultural event. Pallavi was born in Perth but grew up and spent most of her life in Melbourne. She said that she was incredibly happy that she was chosen for the event and felt that the event was special for her.
It was, indeed, an innovative way to utilize the inning break time and celebrate a particular community’s presence in the city. The match, however, ended on a sad note for Renegades as they lost to Sydney Sixers later in the evening by three wickets.
