Michael Hussey sealed the game in Sydney Thunders favour after smashing a match-winning 59 balls 80. It’s been almost three years since retiring from the Test arena, 40-year-old Hussey turned out to be the sheet anchor with a captain’s knock that included five fours and four sixes.
He plundered 4 sixes and 5 boundaries and was particularly aggressive against Doug Bollinger. He took the bowlers to the cleaners and smashed whenever he faced a lose delivery.
He swept hard and pulled big. He towered some huge blows and picked up a couple of runs to reach to his half-century off 46 balls. He was set for a big and made it count with a six in the last ball of Thunders innings. Apart from Hussey, Ben Rohrer also played a vital cameo off 30 runs from 20 balls with one six and couple of boundaries.
The Sixers were never in the chase as they lost a steady procession of wickets, with Watson finishing with 3-13 off two overs.
Watson threw his wicket away, clean bowled for 16 attempting to sweep Nathan Lyon, however, made amends with a great spell of bowling, picking up the wickets of dangerman Jordan Silk, allrounder Sean Abbott and Trent Lawford.
West Indian import Andre Russell was also outstanding, clean bowling ex-Test wicketkeeper Brad Haddin for 13 and finishing his four overs with 3-13.
Besides Haddin, opener Michael Lumb (34 off 27), Johan Botha (13) and Jackson Bird (14) were the only other Sixers batsmen to reach double figures. Lumb had a forgettable night, dropping an absolute sitter of a catch after Watson skied a rising ball.
