England batsmen are currently finding it tough to bat on the crumbling Wankhede pitch. It’s well-known fact that day four and day five are perhaps the toughest to bat at the venue and an example of it can be England’s poor start in the third innings. While Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow are currently grinding it out in the middle, former England captain Michael Vaughan, who is now a part of the commentary panel to cover the India-England Test series, found an interesting way of describing the pitch.
On Sunday, ahead of the start of Day Four’s play, Vaughan posted a short video on his official Twitter account to describe exactly how the pitch is like at the moment. Vaughan is known to add some humour in his analysis and this video was no different as he compared the pitch with ‘biscuits’. He also had noted English sports journalist and broadcaster Henry Blofeld, who is best known as a cricket commentator for Test Match Special on BBC Radio, as his partner. Vaughan begins with applauding Virat Kohli’s record-breaking batting effort and then moved on to the pitch report.
He spoke how the Wankhede pitch was said to have an orange tinge due to the soil, before comparing it with a biscuit on Day 1.
“Throughout the week, we have been saying that it has a little bit of an orange tinge to it, a tangerine soil I call it. But, I would say, it more like a biscuit. It was more like a ginger crunch. Now we are on day four, a look at the pitch and it got worse, it is not a ginger anymore. It’s like shortbread – lighter, pale in colour. You take in the hand and it breaks like you get in the hotels.”
He then demonstrated with the help of a spoon and a pitch made of biscuits on the table. Vaughan proceeded to crush it into powder and eventually came up to the conclusion saying that this is what the pitch looks like at the moment in the middle at the moment.
