A series loss always hurts and hurts you more when you are the skipper. India’s limited-overs captain MS Dhoni would be under serious pressure now since the team has lost their third consecutive series with the loss to Australia at the MCG. They were coming here on back of a historic win over South Africa in the Tests but the team hadn’t really done well in the shorter formats as they had lost the away series to Bangladesh and the home series to South Africa. Is it time that we start to review MS Dhoni’s ODI captaincy as well?
A journalist covering the match certainly felt that and that is what he asked Dhoni in the post-match press conference. How do you review your position after the series loss? He asked. Dhoni in his own style said, “There will be a conflict of interest if I start reviewing my performance. You have to put up a PIL to judge my performance as a skipper; also you have to see more than series win and everything what’s really is happening what are the segments where we are lacking where we have to improve as a team. It’s not about the leader, I am there, somebody else will come but what’s more important to see is the areas we are lacking, what are the departments which have to improve specially in the shorter formats and I think it’s the fast bowling department in,”
“We have kept asking the same question whenever we come outside; we don’t have a seaming all-rounder so let’s not even go to that topic. It’s the fast bowlers how act, they give away easy boundaries and that in turn puts a lot of pressure so if you see this series, if you compare the whole bowling lineup this is a relatively inexperienced bowling lineup. Ishant is somebody who has played a lot of international cricket but if you see the ODI format he is not somebody who has been consistently part of the format. Umesh has been on and off and at the same time there are others who made their debut also in the tournament. What we have to asses at right now is how good the individuals are, how they are doing, and what is the rate of their development, you have to groom, I have always said we have to groom the youngsters, we don’t get complete products, we have to groom them, make them play and at the end of it you will find players who will service the team for long time.” He concluded.
