A brilliant spell of off-spin bowling from Australia’s premier spinner Nathan Lyon put his team in a solid position on day 2 of the ongoing first Test against the West Indies. He mesmerised the middle order in an outstanding spell taking 3 for 19 in the session leading up to tea. Using his flight he consistently bowled tight lines and kept building the pressure on the batsmen.
His 2nd wicket that of Marlon Samuels was courtesy a stunning return catch he took. Showing scintillating reflexes he threw himself into the air to his left and completed the catch as Samuels went for the drive on the up. It was a tossed up delivery outside off which tempted the batsman to go for the shot.
Samuels particularly doesn’t like to be dominated by spinners and tried to always dictate terms to term. Today, though he couldn’t quite control his shot and ended up given an opportunity to Lyon who gleefully accepted it with both hands.
The other two wickets Lyon took today were that of opener Rajendra Chandrika, who was caught on 25 by Steven Smith, at first, slip after driving against the spin and that of Jermaine Blackwood. A tossed up delivery on a good length outside off that spun into Blackwood accounted for his wicket. He went without scoring trying to defend the ball with hard hands that gave a simple catch to short leg. Lyon was the pick of the bowlers and on a flat batting, pitch managed to keep the batsmen in check with classical off-spin bowling.
