Watch: Oman Captain Sultan Ahmed dedicates World T20 qualification to his late mother: On Thursday, when the Oman Cricket team deflated the Namibia side in the ICC World T20 qualifiers, they achieved something mammoth which was never achieved before in the history of Oman cricket. The five-wicket win had sealed them a coveted entry in the World T20 2016, which will be held in India. For any budding cricketer representing the nation in World Cup is the pinnacle of any colossal achievement. After winning the match, the preponderant emotions of ecstasy and gratification were ever so evident on the face of Oman skipper Sultan Ahmed who dedicated the historic victory to his mother, who passed away last week and also to the father of a teammate, Khawar Ali, who died recently.
Now with this result it is confirmed that apart from the top 10 member-nations, the likes of Ireland, Scotland, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Afghanistan and Oman would also feature in the World T20 2016. In the match that mattered Oman chased down the target of 149 with 5 wickets in hand and an over remaining.
The batting stalwart of Oman’s side and the Man of the match Zeeshan Siddiqui compiled match winning knock of 51 runs which swayed away the ineffective Namibia bowlers. In the 18th over of the match when Zeeshan smashed a four and then a six, Oman players and fans knew that now they were just few steps away from carving history which they eventually did. Earlier, it was the disciplined and well-crafted bowling by Oman team led by the audacity of Munis Ansasri which restricted the Namibia side to a total of 148 runs.
So far, Oman has defeated the strong teams of Afghanistan and Netherlands in the tournament which is a testimony of their top-notch credentials as a team. But, the only drawback of the side is inconsistency which keeps haunting them and it was highlighted by their coach Derek Pringle as well. The team boasts a very good team spirit and even before the match, Oman players were seen praying and then motivating each other which also underlines what this sport means to them. Zeeshan Siddiqui who was wrapped in the Oman’s flag at the presentation ceremony was a moment to be cherished for the decades to come when this team reaches even greater heights.
