Watch: Ravi Bopara’s runner confuses Australian fielders: The players, the umpires and the audience did stand astonished for a few minutes when the presence of a runner complicated things on field. England struggling for a win at the score of 134/8 needing 116 runs from 86 balls when the chaos takes place. England all-rounder Ravi Bopara batting was along with pacer James Anderson. Since Bopara felt he was not 100% fit and asked for a runner, he had a substitute batsman running for him from the far end of the crease.
The Australians however, seemed to have forgotten that they had a runner for him. Bopara guided a Mitchell Johnson delivery to backward point and the two set (his runner and Anderson) for a single after some hesitation. Meanwhile on his follow through, Johnson collected the ball and dislodged the bails looking at Bopara the striker who was still rooted in his crease.
What he failed to realise was, there was another player on the field completing the run on his behalf. The funniest thing about the video is the reaction of Michael Clarke whose eyes kept moving like a pendulum for the next couple of minutes to get to grips with what was happening and how should he react.
It took quite a long for the Australian players to get a grasp of the situation. The celebration which came too soon, especially from Brett Lee and Johnson, had to be stopped abruptly after they realized the whole scenario. Runner was a substitute who ran in behalf of the injured batsman. Though today as per the modified regulations of the ICC don’t allow the batsmen to have a runner, though they have the luxury or retiring hurt and returning to bat at the later stage of the innings.
The situation turns out to be a rather funny one. Michael Clarke’s expressions are a sight worth watching. The confusion literally left everyone on the field laughing over it.
