In what turned out to be a freakish incident, Cape Cobra’s Richard Levi got hit on his head from a wild throw. Opening the batting, Wayne Parnell’s sublime 99, his first T20 fifty guided Cape Cobra to hunt down 154 against Lions with six wickets to spare in Johannesburg. The win pushed Cobras to the second spot with 20 points, eight behind Titans.
Parnell smashed back-to-back fours off Dwaine Pretorius early in his gritty innings before tucking into the spinners. He notched up his fifty off 32 balls after the fall of Andrew Puttick, but the wicket did not hamper him. Eddie Leie was swept over midwicket, Hardus Viljoen was hit over the covers and long-on.
Parnell then changed gear from 87 to 99 with a brace of sixes but missed the century as he skied one to backward point. He fell with his side eight runs away from the target, but Rory Kleinveldt put the seal on the win with a six over midwicket.
This incident put light onto another bizarre that took place recently. Punjab’s Brainder Sran smashed a straight drive past left-arm orthodox spinner DT Chandrasekhar and the ball hit umpire John Ward on the back of his head. Ward collapsed to the ground in pain and he was immediately taken to the Apollo Hospital in Madurai, which was 40 kilometers away from the venue.
