43-year-old Ryan Campbell has stolen headlines following his inclusion in the 15 man Hong Kong squad for the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup. Having played for Australia previously, Campbell joins the elite list of players to have represented two different countries internationally.
Prior to his selection, Ryan Campbell donned the Australian ODI jersey on two separate occasions in 2002. In the absence of wicket-keeping mainstay Adam Gilchrist, Campbell seized the opportunity to represent the country of his birth.
Although he failed to produce an extraordinary performance, Campbell etched his batting credentials in a match between Australia A and Sri Lanka. Playing against Sri Lanka on his home ground, the WACA in Perth played a gem of an innings towards the close of the Australian A batting innings.
Facing left arm pacer Nuwan Zoysa, Campbell shuffled across his stumps, wonderfully executing a scoop shot over the head of Kumar Sangakkara. The boundary had clearly created a doubt in the mind of Zoysa. The latter ended up bowling the same deliver, only for the result to be the same. This time, Campbell not only completed the shot, but summer-salted back to his feet to begin his run towards the non-striker’s end.
Many have regarded Campbell as the inventor of the scoop shot and not Tillakaratne Dilshan. AB de Villiers will certainly be indebted to Campbell, a shot that has been extremely profitable for de Villers.
Thus, it certainly comes as no surprise that Ryan Campbell has been included in the 15 man Hong Kong squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
