Afghanistan’s participation in the World T20 2016 has come at the expense of full member nation Zimbabwe. Samiullah Shenwari and Mohammad Shehzad have been the entertainers-in-chief for the high-flying Afghans with their ridiculous shot making abilities. While Shehzad has been a resemblance of a cartoon character, Shenwari has seamlessly slipped into the T20 batting mode. While many say that he had it dormant in him, other believe that he has shifted to a higher gear for the shortest format of the game he loves so dearly.
For perhaps the first time in their history as a cricket playing nation, the Afghans were given a good chance to overwhelm a Sri Lankan side in transition. The Lankans, a formidable opposition on their day, were given an even lesser chance with their slinger Lasith Malinga missing from the match-day program.
The Afghans, however, showed no signs of pressure as they went about their business of thrashing the Lankan bowling. The intervention from Samiullah Shenwari however, was perhaps the turning point of the Afghan innings. There was absolutely no logic to the shots he played. He swung his bat at each delivery, keeping the uncertainty of the outcome hanging by a thread. Little did he know that the hoicking and the slapping of the cricket ball had brought him to a stage in his gem on an innings where he was unbeaten on 31 off just 14 balls.
One of the most amusing of strokes was the reverse sweep played off a Thisara Perera off-cutter. A horribly executed shot eventually found the fence purely out of luck. However, the cameramen at the Stadium were least bothered about catching the boundary. Their lenses were focused on the unfortunate Samiullah Shenwari who had lost his balance after executing the ill-fated shot.
