The Rangpur Riders captain, Shakib Al Hasan was suspended for one BPL match and fined Tk 20,000 for two counts of breaching the BCB’s Code of Conduct during the match against Sylhet Super Stars on Thursday. He was forced to miss his side’s clash against Comilla Victorians on Friday. His team dearly missed him as it lost by 9 wickets in a one-sided contest. Shakib has been the star performer for his team winning back to back Man-of–the-Match awards in the previous two BPL matches.

Shakib was reported by the on-field umpires for using abusive language after dismissing Sylhet batsman Dilshan Munaweera in the 4th over; his suspension though was for directing offensive and abusive language towards the umpire Tanvir Ahmed in the 13th over of the Sylhet innings. Thisara Perera got one to rise sharply at Mushfiqur Rahim but there was no clear evidence of an edge from multiple angles. After the appeal for that wicket was turned down, Shakib was seen speaking animatedly with the umpire who clearly looked shocked at the all-rounder’s reaction and words.

The BCB press release said that as Shakib admitted the offences and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Selim Shahid, a formal hearing was not required. It was disturbing to see such a behaviour from a senior player like him. Being the captain of the team, the major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with him and he clearly disappointed with such an extreme reaction.

He deservedly got suspended and was lucky to have escaped with just one match ban. Shakib had also been suspended in 2014 from all forms of cricket for six months due to ‘serious misbehaviour’ since he and the Bangladesh coach were involved in an altercation with a spectator during an ODI against India at Mirpur and this new incident only adds to his growing reputation of being a temperamental cricketer.
