Shane Bond was in red-hot form in the 2001/02 VB Series in Australia. Bond was the highest wicket-taker in this tourney that featured the home side, South Africa and his team New Zealand. He took 21 wickets at 16.38 and one of these wickets was that of Gilchrist. Defending a target of 243 against the hosts, the Kiwis needed a strong start with the ball and their premier fast bowler answered his captain’s call in grand style.
After Dion Nash took the wicket of Mark Waugh and gave the visitors an important breakthrough, Bond ran riot and claimed 3 huge wickets. After removing Ricky Ponting for a duck and Damien Martyn for 2, he produced a remarkable yorker that cleaned up the dashing Gilly who was looking good on 21. If there was ever a perfect definition of a yorker, this had to be in.
The ball clocked 148 kph on the speed guns and what made it unplayable was its trajectory. Swinging late in the air from the batsman’s leg stump line, the ball ended up at the base of the middle stump that left Gilly completely off-balance. The great man looked to play the ball towards the onside but it was too good even for someone of his calibre. Bond took a five-for as the Aussies were bundled out for 165.
