In the 17th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2016 between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, West Indies fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell had quite an embarrassing moment. The bowler was running in to bowl the 18th over in St Kitts bid to restrict the Tallawahs to a manageable total. On the 3rd ball of the over, he was so certain that he had his man that decided to celebrate even before turning to the umpire for his verdict.

It turned out that the umpire missed that one. The ball had hit the batsman Shakib Al Hasan’s glove as it was comfortably caught by the wicketkeeper. Sheldon pitched the ball outside the off-stump, Shakib tried to go cheeky and made room towards the leg-side. He tried for the scoop but just managed to get his glove to the ball.

The bowler Cottrell and the St Kitts wicketkeeper Devon Thomas were convinced that they had the man and as soon as he caught the ball and started celebrating. It was only when they realized that Shakib wasn’t moving from the crease that the bowler turned to the umpire. By the time Sheldon Cottrell had already finished his salute send-off tradition. But since the umpire hadn’t noticed the edge he had to walk back to his bowling mark. The bowler looked stunned as it was quite a straight forward call in his view.

Tallawahs posted 183 in their share of overs and were exceptional with the ball to start with. None of the St Kitts and Nevis batsmen showed character in the chase and they were wrapped up for just 75 runs. With that, the Jamaica team completed a comprehensive 108-run victory to march their way ahead in the CPL 2016.
