Australian captain Steve Smith had a great time in the ODI series. One they were winning, which comes as a pleasant change for them having lost the last two Test series’ along with the 5-0 whitewash in South Africa; two he got together his own act, he was scoring with the bat and that reflected in his captaincy as well. To top it up, he was simply mind blowing on the field.

Earlier he had taken an absolute stunner to dismiss New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling in the second ODI today in the closing moments of the game Smith once again stunned everyone with his effort as he pulled off a blinder at second slip to dismiss Trent Boult and wrap up the game. Australia won the third ODI by 117 runs and with that took the series 3-0.

It was the first ball of the 37th over from Pat Cummins a slower back of the length delivery Boult backed away and in his attempt to run the ball down to the third-man boundary opened the face of the bat. But all it managed was a thickish outside edge. The skipper who had positioned himself at second slip dived full length to his right, reached out to the ball and completed a splendid catch.

Batting first Australia powered by David Warner’s century posted a competitive 264/8 in their 50 overs. The wicket at the MCG wasn’t a featherbed and varied in characteristic from the two we had already seen in the series. Batting wasn’t as easy and the Aussie bowlers had New Zealand down on their knees with constant wickets. After a positive opening stand between Martin Guptill and Tom Latham no other batsman got going and with frequent fall of wickets, they were never in the chase.

Eventually, with this catch the match as well as the series came to an end as Australia bowled the visitors out for 147 to take the series 3-0.
