Since the end of Australian summer, anyone who follows cricket religiously will know that 28-year-old Nathan Lyon has had a serious makeover. Much of the credit belongs to the preparatory camp in Dubai where he bowled several deliveries. And he is now reaping all benefits of his hours-long training.

Lyon exploits have made everyone take notice including his inspiration, Ravi Ashwin. And it seems like the offie has now managed to go one notch higher than his favourite counterpart. Lyon extracted tremendous bounce from the M. Chinnaswamy pitch to keep the Indian batsmen wanting. Ashwin on the other hand, did not manage to extract that much amount of bounce.

A comparison of the two reveals that Lyon, who has a more conventional action, uses more of his body – his upper body mostly. Another factor is the much bigger pivot for Nathan Lyon which results in the transfer of his body weight into the ball resulting in more bounce.

Ashwin relies on finger spin with lesser body weight transfer. Lyon imparts more revolutions on the ball than Ashwin. Thus, the mix of bodyweight with more revolutions gets the ball to kick on the surface.

Lyon’s 8/50 in the first innings of the second Test in Bengaluru helped the visitors bowl out India for 189 runs. But Ashwin managed to pick up only 2 wickets in Australia’s first innings.

But if you talk about the overall numbers, the 30-year-old Ravi Ashwin is way ahead of Lyon. He has already bagged 24 five-wicket hauls in just 84 innings. Lyon, on the other hand, does not enjoy such numbers. He has a strike rate of 63.89 but he remains far behind Ashwin in every aspect.

Here’s a video by the BCCI in which the commentators explain the difference in bowling styles of both the spinners.
