Watch: The Umpires get it Horribly wrong: Cricket Umpiring is no child’s play. Amidst the pressure of shouting players and camera glares you have to keep a cool head and trust your judgement. It is no secret that one or two bad calls can change the complexion of the match. While prior to the era of technology, players accepted the mistakes as human errors, these days the situation is markedly different. The umpires are expected to be on their toes and with so much scrutiny there is no place to hide.

While umpiring standards have improved substantially with DRS, there are still decisions which should be adjudged without the technical aid. Many elite panel umpires also get it wrong at times. The video compiles three of the most dismal umpiring calls.

The first one involves a clear edge by AB de Villiers off Zaheer Khan which Sachin catches brilliantly in the slips. But Aleem Dar fails to spot that and India are left furious. Sachin and the rest of the fielders are literally pleading to Dar, but he is unmoved.

The second one is simply unreal. The ball passes at about a metre away from Andrew Flintoff’s bat but the umpire raises his finger in a hurry. What is noticeable is that the bowler Adams didn’t appeal at all and the umpire just got carried away with an over enthusiastic Parore behind the stumps.

And now the third one. Despite the use of technology the third umpire erred and in pretty sorry fashion. Gilchrist had clearly made his ground before the wicket keeper removed the bails but the man who mattered saw it differently. The result was Australia had to pay for the ‘wise man’s’ mistake.
