Umpiring howlers continued in the India-England limited overs series as Indian opener KL Rahul was castled by Ben Stokes of a no ball but the onfield umpire Anil Chaudhary didn’t pick it up and Stokes survived the close shave. If it was 10 years back, it wouldn’t have been a big issue but standing in today’s generation where umpires check for the front foot with the 3rd umpire on numerous occasions, it came as a shock to the Indian fans.

It was during the 8th over of the match, when Rahul had a wild swing to a length delivery and missed it completely. The ball crashed onto the stumps and England got their 2nd breakthrough. It was a horrendous shot from Rahul as he swung blindly through the line. With his dismissal, MS Dhoni came in earlier than usual and started to keep the runs flowing with Suresh Raina.

But during the beginning of the next over, television replays clearly suggested that Stokes had overstepped and he got a lucky reprieve. It was a dubious decision during a crucial juncture of the game. Though the umpire’s mistake didn’t cost India in the end as the hosts thrashed the Brits by 75 runs to pocket the 3 match T20I series 2-1. With the T20 series victory, Virat Kohli and his men have completed a clean sweep of England across all formats.

England had filed an official complaint to the match referee after the previous match which saw Joe Root being wrongly given out during the make or break situation of the match. The match could have gone either way if the decision went in England’s favour but in the end, India had the slice of luck and managed to win that encounter by 5 runs to keep the series alive.  It has been a tough two and a half months for England in the Indian shores losing all the 3 series and it will require some character to bounce back.

India now faces Bangladesh in the one-off Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on 9th February followed by a 4 match series against Australia beginning on 23rd February. Their next limited overs assignment is the Champions Trophy in England in June where they will come all guns to defend their title.
