Ravichandran Ashwin’s fabulous 12/167 guided India to a commanding victory by an innings and 36 runs and take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The off-spinner snapped 4/6 in four overs to wrap up the England lower order and finish the match in first half hour of the morning session on the final day.
This win also gave Virat Kohli his fifth consecutive series victory as a skipper and equally India’s unbeaten series winning streak. The previous purple patch came under the leadership of MS Dhoni in between October 2008 and January 2010.
Kohli has been enjoying a wonderful run as a skipper after taking over the captaincy from MS Dhoni during the Australia tour in 2015. Since then Kohli has registered series wins over South Africa (in India), Sri Lanka (in Sri Lanka), West Indies (in West Indies), New Zealand (in India) and now England (in India).
England, after winning the toss and posting 400 in the first innings, had it tough thereafter in the match. India was pushed to the wall by the stunning batting display from England. But, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli and Jayant Yadav pressed their superiority and threw England out of the contest. Rest of the match belonged to the spinners, especially Ravichandran Ashwin who followed up his 6/112 in the first innings with a better figure of 6/55.
Kohli & Co were absolutely delighted. It was the same place where England, four years ago, beat India and went to register a series win. The game saw the crowd coming in masses to witness Virat Kohli’s tour de force and support Team India. The match saw a great turnout. Even on the last day, where everyone knew that the game would finish in maximum one hour, people still lined up to enjoy the winning moment. Virat Kohli and his team, therefore, made sure to pay back the respect and took a victory lap for the fans in the stadium.
