Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli has hit back at Ben Stokes after he fell to Ashwin in the last over of Day 3 at Mohali. With 4 wickets down for 78 runs, the third Test match is slipping away from the grasp of England, to say the least.

The aggressive contest between Stokes and Kohli started when the English batsman was dismissed in the first innings by Ravindra Jadeja. He charged down the wicket to Jadeja, but only to be stumped by wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel.

Upon his departure, Kohli said something to Stokes that triggered an aggressive response. Later, Stokes was reprimanded by the ICC for using offensive language.

However, Stokes got his opportunity to give a fitting reply to the Indian captain, when he edged Kohli safely into the hands of England wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow. Stokes immediately put his hand over his mouth as a gesture for the verbal spat he had with Kohli when England was batting.

And today, in the last over on Day 3 off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin, Stokes was trapped leg-before-wicket. The on-field umpire turned down the appeal, but Ashwin was confident enough to convince Kohli to go upstairs. India reviewed and that was the end of Stokes as three red stood against him in the hawk-eye. As he walked back, the Indian skipper put both the fingers to his lips to replicate Stokes’s gesture.

India is leading the 5-match Test series 1-0 and with 4 wickets down in this match, India is inching closer to victory. England is still trailing the match by 56 runs and India are just 6 wickets away from victory. However, with 2 more matches yet to be played in the series, we might witness more of this competition between the duo.
