The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is the women’s domestic T20 competition in Australia. The tournament features eight city-based franchise which are branded identically to the men’s Big Bash League. The playing eleven for each match in the team consists of mostly Australian players and a maximum of three overseas marquee players. The first edition of the league was played in the 2015-16 season. In this article, we will be listing out winners of each edition of WBBL.
2015-16: Sydney Thunder
Sydney Thunder won the inaugural season of WBBL defeating Sydney Sixers in the final. They chased down the required target of 116 runs in 19.3 overs winning by 3 wickets. Meg Lanning scored the most runs (560) in the first season, while Rene Farrell was the highest wicket-taker (26).
2016-17: Sydney Sixers
Sydney Sixers reached the finals for the second consecutive season, and this time they won the title. They defeated Perth Scorchers by 7 runs after scoring 124/5 while batting first. In this season, Meg Lanning was the highest run-getter (503) again, while Sarah Aley topped the bowling charts with 28 wickets.
2017-18: Sydney Sixers
The Sydney Sixers team retained their title in the 2017-18 season with a 9 wicket victory over Brisbane Heat in the final. This time, Ellyse Perry scored the most runs (552) while in the bowling tally, Katherine Brunt and Sarah Aley picked up joint-most wickets (23).
2018-19: Brisbane Heat
Sydney Sixers reached the finals for the fourth time in a row in 2018-19. This time, Brisbane Heat won their maiden title with a 3-wicket victory. In the batting charts for the season, Ellyse Perry was at number 1 with 777 runs, while Delissa Kimmince and Heather Graham took the joint-most wickets (22).
2019-20: Brisbane Heat
Brisbane Heat won their second title in a row with a 6-wicket victory against Adelaide Strikers in the final encounter. They chased down the target of 162 runs with 11 balls to spare. Sophie Devine was the top scorer (769) in this season while Molly Strano was the highest wicket-taker (24).
2020-21: Sydney Thunder
The Sydney Thunder team which won in the inaugural season won their second title in 2020-21. They defeated Melbourne Stars by 7 wickets in the final chasing the small target of 87 runs in 13.4 overs. Beth Mooney scored the most runs (551) and Sammy-Jo Johnson picked up the most wickets (22) in this season.
