Sri Lankan cricket is well and truly in the middle of a tumultuous phase, especially in limited-overs cricket where they have flattered to deceive on quite a few occasions in the last few months. Angelo Mathews captained the ODI team, which lost the five-match series against South Africa. The team thereafter took part in the 2018 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

They were placed in Group B along with Afghanistan and Bangladesh. To their dismay, they lost both their matches and crashed out of the multi-nation event after finishing at the bottom of the table. Subsequently, Mathews was not only sacked as the captain but was also sidelined from the ODI squad. In the meantime, Dinesh Chandimal believes Mathews will make a strong comeback.

Mathews still the best

Chandimal also reckons Mathews needs to work on his fitness in order to stake his claim back in the side. “We all know he(Mathews) is our best batsman, especially when it comes to the shorter formats. I hope he will identify what he needs to do to come back to the side and come back strongly. It is mainly his fitness,” Chandimal was quoted as saying by the media.

Chandimal was earlier appointed as the captain of the Lankan ODI team as well, replacing Mathews. He is also the skipper of the Test side. He has also been a part of quite a few controversies in the past, the latest one coming in the Test series against the Windies after the umpires decided to change the ball after suspecting that Chandimal applied something to the red cherry.

The Lankans will play five ODIs, one T20I and three Tests against England. The first match is scheduled to be played from tomorrow at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. The three-match Test series will take place in Galle, Pallekele, and Colombo respectively.
