'We thought we will have to share the trophy' - Rohit Sharma reveals interesting backstory from India's Champions Trophy win

The Indian team is currently taking part in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. Although their journey is more or less over, they will lock horns with Namibia in a dead rubber on November 08. Ahead of the contest, India’s ace batter Rohit Sharma came up with a lesser-known story from the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Rohit rolled back the clock to India’s last win in an ICC trophy eight years ago when on the final’s day, it was raining cats and dogs. The 34-year-old said that all the players were sitting relaxed in the dining area and felt that the Men in Blue would have to share the coveted trophy with England. Rohit said that going by the weather conditions, it wasn’t looking possible in any manner that the game will take place.

“There’s a very good story to that final because it was raining the whole day. We thought we will have to share the trophy with England. The amount of rain that came down, we thought there is no possibility of play because of the wet outfield and all of that. The groundsmen said they need a certain time to get the ground ready. So inside we were assuming that it’s not possible,” said Sharma in a video posted by the ICC.

Going down the memory lane, Rohit said that when all the players were totally in a relaxed mood and were having discussions away from the game, the umpires walked in and told that proceedings will kick off in 20 minutes. The players were surprised to some extent and India went on to win the game under the guidance of MS Dhoni. India have been struggling for an ICC Trophy since then and their current campaign of T20 WC 2021 has turned out to be dismal.

“All the guys were relaxed. Nobody was talking about the game. Nobody was thinking about the game. We were sitting in the dining area, chilling, talking about something else. Suddenly, the umpire comes in and he says the game will start in 20 minutes. We just jumped out of our seats and were like, ‘Okay, Really?'” Rohit added.

The match against Gerhard Erasmus’s Namibia in the T20 World Cup will also be Virat Kohli’s last as India’s T20I skipper.
