Marnus Labuschagne has been on a roll in the last couple of years and his numbers in Test cricket are nothing short of phenomenal. He, in fact, has advanced to the top of the ICC Test rankings for batters. The right-handed batter looked impressive in the ongoing fifth Ashes Test as well. However, he fell prey to England pacer Stuart Broad in a bizarre manner.

Labuschagne, who was batting on 44 off 52 deliveries, tried to play a cheeky shot but lost his wicket instead. He shuffled across the off-stump even before the release of the ball. Although Labuschagne has executed many such shots in the past, the 27-year-old slipped this time and lost his balance. As a result, he fell on the ground while Broad’s full-length delivery smashed the middle stump.

It was indeed a shocking dismissal as Labuschagne has been Australia’s key batter. Also, the home team made a dismal start to the Day-Night Test in Hobart, losing openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner cheaply. Even Steve Smith bagged a duck, leaving Australia reeling at 12/3. However, Labuschagne played some fine shots and sent English bowlers on the back foot.

The top-ranked Test batter joined forces with comeback man Travis Head and the duo steadied the ship. The pair added 71 runs for the fourth wicket before Labuschagne got out. Several fans and experts weren’t amused with the young batter’s approach, calling the shot ‘untimely and needless.’ It must be noted that Labuschagne’s tally of 330 runs in the most by any batter in this series.

Owing to the same, England team was delighted with his shocking dismissal. Meanwhile, Australia enjoy an unassailable 3-0 lead in the ongoing series. Hence, the English team has nothing but pride to play for. Unlike the previous games, England got off to a stellar start with Australia’s top-order suffering a rare failure. However, the likes of Travis Head, Cameron Green and Alex Carey have been impressive in this series. Hence, Joe Root’s men must not get complacent.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Marnus Labuschagne’s shocking dismissal:
