West Indies completed whitewash over Ireland in the 3-match ODI series as they registered a 5-wicket win in the last match. Ireland, who batted first yet again, bowled out for only 203. Andy Balbirnie rescued the Irish team with a 71-run knock while Hayden Walsh Jr. bagged a 4-wicket haul.

A rain interval during the chase revised the target to 197 from 47 overs. The target was enough for Evin Lewis to complete a century who made 102 from 97 with 11 boundaries before getting out. They completed the chase in 36.2 overs with Nicholas Pooran scoring an unbeaten 44-ball 43.

All the statistical highlights from West Indies’ 3rd consecutive win in the ODI series against Ireland:

A series of chasing targets:

1 – The series against Ireland is the first for West Indies in ODI cricket where they whitewashed the opponents by chasing down a target in all matches of the series.

2014-2016 – The last instance of West Indies winning three consecutive ODI matches while chasing a target at home was during 2014-2016. Between these two streaks, the West Indies team won as few as three out of 16 ODIs while chasing at home.

West Indies’ art of whitewashes:

4 – West Indies won only as few as four multi-match ODI series since the start of 2013 – vs Zimbabwe in 2013, vs Bangladesh in 2014, vs Afghanistan in 2019 and vs Ireland in 2020. All these four series were 3-match series and the West Indies won by whitewashing the opponents in all four.

A series to remember for Lewis:

1 – Evin Lewis became the first West Indies batsman to score a hundred during a successful ODI chase in more than six years. Chris Gayle, during the 2013 ODI Tri-series, was the last Caribbean player to score a century during a successful ODI chase at home. The unbeaten 99 by Lewis in the first ODI of this series is the highest score in a home ODI chase for West Indies between the two centuries.

208 – The 208 runs by Evin Lewis are the 3rd most by a West Indies player in a 3-match home ODI series. Denesh Ramdin aggregated 277 runs against Bangladesh in 2014 while Phil Simmons scored 226 runs against South Africa in 1992 where he batted only two innings.

Walsh takes 4-fer:

4/36 – The 4/36 by Hayden Walsh Jr. in this match is only the 4th 4-wicket haul by a leg-spinner for West Indies. Rajindra Dhanraj took 4/26 against New Zealand in the 1994 Guwahati ODI while Mahendra Nagamootoo had figures of 4/32 against Zimbabwe in the 2001 Adelaide ODI. Anthony Martin also recorded figures of 4/36 when they played India in the 2011 home ODI series.

A rare century by a home team opener:

28y 16y – Evin Lewis is the 2nd youngest West Indies opener to score an ODI century at home since 2007. Johnson Charles was a 24-year-old when he scored 130 against Zimbabwe in 2013 also at the St George’s Stadium.

2013 – The last West Indies opener other than Chris Gayle to score an ODI century at home was Ramnaresh Sarwan during the ODI series against Zimbabwe in 2013 February. Between Sarwan and Lewis’ centuries, Gayle smashed three ODI tons while opening the batting for West Indies at home.
