BCCI, a couple of days ago, announced a second string yet strong India squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. The selectors handed over as many as five maiden call-ups in the 20-member team awarding domestic and IPL performances. However, one consistent performer at the domestic level Jaydev Unadkat didn’t get a place in this squad.

The left-arm medium pacer is going through a purple patch over the last few seasons. He picked up a whopping 67 wickets in the previous Ranji Trophy season and most of them on a flat Rajkot deck. Unadkat also started his Indian Premier League (IPL) season well with four-wicket haul this year.

But he had to yet again make do with the ignorance with the selectors handing Chetan Sakariya and Krishnappa Gowtham maiden call-ups to national side. Recently, it was reported that it will be tough for Unadkat to make a comeback now given that age is not on his side.

Fans disappointed with the selectors

Jaydev Unadkat has played one Test, 7 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India picking 8 and 14 wickets in the limited-overs formats. He last played for the country during the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka in 2018 while his last Test and ODI appearances came in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

The 29-year-old cricketer has been prolific, to say the least in the domestic cricket. He has played 89 First-Class, 100 List-A and 150 T20 matches picking 327, 141 and 182 wickets respectively. He has also played 84 IPL matches and his variations were once considered the best in the format when in the 2017 season, the bowler had done exceedingly well for Rising Pune Supergiant.

But now Jaydev Unadkat seems to have gone down the pecking order. While a few fans were furious that he wasn’t included in the ODI and T20I side for Sri Lanka tour, many also reckoned he should’ve been part of the Test side itself. India is set to play three ODIs and as many T20Is in Sri Lanka from July 13 to 25. Like the Test team, even this squad will undergo proper quarantine in Mumbai before flying to Sri Lanka later this month or in the first week of July.
