Tom Latham will be an extremely satisfied man heading into the third and final ODI against Bangladesh at Wellington. For, it was Latham’s responsible 108-ball unbeaten 110 that allowed his side to come out of troubled waters and post a five-wicket win over the visitors in the second ODI. And now, with the Black Caps having taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, Latham will be looking to lead his side to a series sweep in the final rubber on 26th March 2021.
The Bangladesh outfit will also be buoyed by the fact that they almost pushed New Zealand to the brink in the second ODI. In fact, at one stage, with the Black Caps reeling at 53/3, it looked as if the Tigers might pull off an upset. But then, the duo of Devon Conway and Latham put on a responsible partnership of 113 runs for the 4th wicket and ensured that the hosts crossed the finish line.
However, Bangladesh can take inspiration from the way they performed in the second ODI. After being bowled out for a paltry 131 in the first match, the visitors put up a much-improved performance with the bat in the second rubber. While Tamim Iqbal stepped up for his side with a patient 78 at the top of the order, Mohammad Mithun blasted his way to a 57 ball 73*, as Bangladesh posted a challenging total of 271/6 on the board. In fact, when Mithun was carting the Kiwi bowlers to all parts of the ground, Tom Latham and his men looked a worried lot.
However, there is still one area of concern for Bangladesh. If it was the batting that let Bangladesh down in the first encounter, it was the fielding that proved to be the Tigers’ downfall in the second ODI. The visitors were benevolent to the Kiwis, as they dropped some sitters on the field. Bangladesh will have to tighten their screws in every department of the game if they harbor any thoughts of avoiding a defeat in the final ODI.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at Wellington will be a good one for batting. The willow wielders will be rewarded for their shots. The key to success would be to spend time out in the middle. The bowlers will also find some purchase in the first few overs as well, as the new ball will dart around.
