The first Test turned out to be a one-sided affair as South Africa took a tad over three days to beat the West Indies by an innings and 63 runs. The Proteas took the initiative from the very first day after which the hosts were always playing catch-up.

The three specialist fast bowlers- Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Anrich Nortje- picked up 18 wickets, ripping the heart out of the Caribbean batting. Amidst the decent show by the pacers, Quinton de Kock’s 170-ball 141 rubbed salt into West Indies’ wounds.

Moreover, the home team was dealt with a blow after Nkrumah Bonner was ruled out due to a concussion. He won’t be a part of the second Test either. The Caribbean team has, meanwhile, left out Jahamar Hamilton and Alzarri Joseph and roped in Darren Bravo and Shannon Gabriel.

Jayden Seales was a bright spot for Kraigg Brathwaite and Co in the opening Test at the Daren Sammy Stadium. After an impressive show in the first innings, the focus will be on him to show some consistency.

The second Test is set to get underway on June 18 and the hosts would be looking to draw the series, a task that won’t be a cakewalk. The pitch is again expected to be a lively one with a significant amount of assistance for the pacers.

Playing combination for WI vs SA

West Indies

The hosts made a change in the eleven in the first Test itself after Bonner was concussed. Kieran Powell came in his place and is likely to retain his place in the eleven, though he couldn’t score big in the second innings. Skipper Brathwaite piled on runs with ease in the Test series against Sri Lanka.

However, he faltered against the Proteas and would be desperate to get back amongst the runs. Roston Chase was arguably the standout batter for the West Indies and a lot will again depend on him. Shai Hope didn’t have the best of returns to Test cricket, and it’s time for him to step up and deliver.

In the bowling department, the onus will be on former skipper Jason Holder, Kemar Roach, and Seales. The likes of Rahkeem Cornwall and Chase may not be used a lot keeping in mind the nature of the pitch.

Predicted XI

Kraigg Brathwaite (C), Kieran Powell, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers, Jermaine Blackwood, Jason Holder, Joshua da Silva (wk), Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales

Bench: Shannon Gabriel, Darren Bravo

South Africa

The Proteas are most likely to not make any changes to their winning combination. It goes without saying that Ngidi, Rabada, and Nortje will again be in charge to make inroads into the out-of-form Caribbean batting lineup.

De Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram also did their bit with the bat in hand as they kept the scoreboard ticking with some smartness and a lot of maturity. Amidst the decent shows, skipper Elgar had a tough time from the personal front.

In the first innings, Kemar Roach pinned him for a duck. The southpaw will want to lead from the front. Keshav Maharaj bowled only 15 overs in the previous game and he may not be used a whole lot even next time around. Kyle Verreynne and Keegan Petersen didn’t have memorable debuts as they got out cheaply.

Predicted XI

Dean Elgar (C), Aiden Markram, Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, Quinton de Kock (wk), Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

Bench: Temba Bavuma, Tabraiz Shamsi, Sarel Erwee, Prenalan Subrayen, Lizaad Williams, Beuran Hendricks, George Linde, Marco Jansen
