Respect plays a big part in sports, especially in team games. India captain Virat Kohli might be the tallest star of his team but he is never short of showing respect to MS Dhoni, his predecessor and also the squad’s senior-most member. The 37-year-old brings with him a sea of experience, as well as skills that add value to Kohli’s arsenal and the latter, is never hesitant to give the former his due respect. The two senior players’ rapport is something the Men in Blue treasure and it was seen once again during the second T20I against Australia in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Kohli and Dhoni put up a significant partnership during batting

Even though India were left rattled by Glenn Maxwell’s mayhem (113 not out off 55 balls) in the game, their batting saw a far better display compared to the first match in Visakhapatnam and the credit goes to Kohli and Dhoni. The duo added 100 runs in less than nine overs for the fourth wicket to take their team to a respectable total of 190 for 4 in 20 overs. Kohli remained not out on 72 off 38 balls while Dhoni improved from his 37-ball 29 in the last game to a 23-ball 40.

The two hit five fours and nine sixes among themselves to post a challenging total though it was eventually dwarfed by Maxwell. Though India did not have much to cheer about while bowling to the Australians who chased 191 losing just 3 wickets with two balls to spare, there was one moment that summarised the camaraderie that Kohli and Dhoni share. The Indian captain often banks on valuable inputs from the experienced wicketkeeper who has a sharp reading of the game from behind the stumps.

On Wednesday, too, Kohli was seen celebrating in his known fashion when an Australian wicket fell and while running towards the other fielders, he stuck out his tongue and pointed one finger at Dhoni in exhilaration. The message was clear: Mate, your plan has worked yet again!

India lost the T20I series 0-2 and will now play the Men in Yellow in a five-ODI series, their final international assignment before the World Cup starting on May 30 in England and Wales.
