MS Dhoni’s retirement has now become a day-to-day talk. Every time India‘s limited-overs squad is announced, a question about him is asked to the chief selector MSK Prasad who reiterates the same statement of ‘moving on’. The veteran himself hasn’t played any competitive cricket since the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand and his silence on the matter is adding fuel to the fire.

But when it comes to team India, there is immense respect for Dhoni and unlike fans and the experts, they aren’t worried about his retirement. All were happy and smiling recently after he visited the dressing room post-India’s win over South Africa in Ranchi. Even Ravi Shastri termed him a ‘true Indian legend’ in a Twitter post. The head coach now has once again opened up on Dhoni’s retirement and feels he has earned the right to quit playing on his own terms.

Shastri slammed the critics and the fans and was perplexed to see everyone in a hurry to see MS Dhoni off. He also recalled how the wicketkeeper-batsman retired from the Tests when he understood that Wriddhiman Saha was ready to take over the gloves behind the stumps.

MS Dhoni knows what’s the right to do

“Half the guys commenting on MS Dhoni can’t even tie their shoelaces. Look at what he’s achieved for the country. Why are people in a hurry to see him off? Maybe, they don’t find enough talking points. He and everybody who knows him know he’ll be going away soon. So, let it happen when it has to. Making statements at his expense is downright disrespectful.

“After 15 years of playing for India, wouldn’t he know what’s the right thing to do? When he retired from Test cricket, what did he say? That Wriddhiman Saha was good enough to be handed over the wicket-keeping gloves. He was correct. He’s been a shadow when it comes to the team, always sharing his mind, lending his views,” Ravi Shastri said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

The 57-year-old also went on to add that MS Dhoni’s words to Shahbaz Nadeem were a huge confidence booster when the former was in India’s dressing room in Ranchi. “The other day, he came over to the dressing room in Ranchi to meet Shahbaz Nadeem and had a chat – how motivating is that for a guy making his debut at home. Let me say this: MS Dhoni has earned the right to retire when he wants to. And let this debate end once and for all,” Shastri added.
