WICB decides to share winners prize money and sponsorship revenue with the West Indies team

West Indies skipper Darren Sammy in an emotional speech after winning the World T20 last night at Kolkata thanked the fans and the coaches, support staff and his team for their support right through; he also thanked the Prime Mininster of Grenada Dr. Keith Mitchell for sending an inspiring message and he also took the opportunity to make public the differences between the players and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Following the teams victory the WICB has Reuters reported that the board has decided to share the entire $1.6 million in prize money as well as some portion of the sponsorship revenue earned during the World T20 with the players.

In the post match presentation Sammy said the team “felt disrespected by the board coming into the tournament”, but WICB Chief Executive Michael Muirhead said that the dispute has been resolved and things are fine now. He said, “Well I’d like to think it was water under the bridge before the tournament started,”

“Yes we had our differences and we had a lot of dialogue and it was made public, but I must say in the end we were able to resolve our differences.”

The President of the WICB Cameron also congratulated both the men’s and women’s team that won the World T20 last night while he also felt that the board deserves some credit for it. He said, “All I can say is, it wasn’t by chance that this happened,”

“We put in a lot of preparations and spent a lot of time in getting both teams ready for this tournament.

“I leave it up to you (media) now to disclose that to the CARICOM officials, who believe that we may not be doing the job that we ought to do.

“We have a lot more to do and we will just have to intensify those efforts to make sure that those plans are institutionalised and rolled out across the region so we have the production of good players through the systems we are putting in place.”
